Lao Kip, Thai Baht and US dollars can generally be used all over Laos but where possible, it is usually best to pay in Kip. If using Thai Baht or US dollars you'll get a slightly less favourable exchange rate than at the banks.
Lao Kip is circulated in 1000, 500, 100
and 50 notes. You will occasionally be offered 20 Kip notes as change
but these are being phased out. Anything lower than 50 kip will all be
coins.
Money changers inside the morning markets now offer the best rates, even
better than the banks. Credit card cash advances are also available at
various ATM's. For cheques you will be charged an enormous amount of commision.
Tip: When you leave Laos, only take Thai
Baht or US dollars CASH with you. It can be difficult to change Kip in
other countries.
